What the post office considers to be ‘Mechanicsville’ (23116) and what Richmond considers to be ‘Mechanicsville’ are slightly different as what is true ‘Mechanicsville’ is the area that runs along the 360 East Corridor. Much of what is considered to be Atlee (and part of MLS Zone 36/East of 301) is still a Mechanicsville Zip, but it really operates differently in the minds of the marketplace. This can be confusing at times.

Mechanicsville is by far and away the most dense area of Hanover and has a decidedly different feel from its western half. 360 (Mechanicsville Turnpike) is more like Broad Street, Hull Street or Midlothian Turnpike with big box retail, car dealerships and strip malls. Old Town Mechanicsville (and home to ‘The Windmill’), a quaint little crossroads that defined the area for much of its history but has now been dwarfed by the development to the east and north along 295, Pole Green Road, 301 and 360.
Mechanicsville also contains multiple Civil War battlefield areas and along with Petersburg, probably contains more ground where battles were fought in and around Richmond than any other area. With school names such as Battlefield Elementary School and Lee Davis High School, it is obvious the effect of the Civil War on the area.
Other more rural areas in 44 exist to the far eastern sections of the county. Black Creek and Old Church are two of the more well known rural points to the east. Route 360 East is also a popular route to the multiple rivers in the Northern Neck of VA and on Friday afternoons for most of the year, a vehicle with boat in tow is a VERY common sight heading east for the weekend.
